1
Truly Bridge Fishing Access – Stop and soak up the views, splash in the water, or fish. You are at the Smith River--a permit to float this river is very sought after around here!
2
Millegan – At one time this was a town. It’s not anymore, but offers a unique perspective of what used to be.
3
Lingshire – there is a wagon train adventure to be had nestled amongst the trees around here with Montana Outfitters. You’ll need to book that ahead of time, they don’t take walk-ins (even if you could find them).
4
Fort Logan – Only one remnant of Fort Logan remains at the site. The Blockhouse is visible from the road, but is not accessible.
5
White Sulphur Springs – You’ll be greeted by privately owned, historic homes that are being restored as you enter town. The Ringling Mansion, built in 1917 on your right, and on your left, one we don’t know much about, but it could likely be the Parberry Mansion. A thermal hot spring, inside the Spa Hot Springs Motel, is available to the public for a little soak before finishing your second half of this trip. A mansion open to the public for tours is the Castle Museum & Carriage House, the former home of Byron Sherman. Two Bassett Brewery sits among the hub of options for food: Bar 47, Jesse Pepper’s BBQ and Bob n’ Kelli’s. Check out The Parberry for some vintage and thrift shopping or Twin Sisters Trading Co for your modern provisions.
6
Showdown Montana – Montana’s first ski hill, with great hikes during the summer, especially to Phorphory Peak Lookout Tower. Climb the tower, visit with the forest service personnel, and enjoy the 360 degree views.
7
King’s Hill Pass – Elevation 7,385'
8
Silver Crest – Downhill skiing not your thing? This spot, right next to Showdown, is a haven for cross country skiing and a little bit of snow shoeing.
9
Neihart – Bob’s Bar has great burgers! The Inconvenience Store has essential grocery items and a few snacks, as well as a working pay phone booth. You’ll still need your own superpowers to turn into a caped hero!
10
Memorial Falls – This is a great stop for a small hike back to see a waterfall.
11
Monarch – This mining community dates to the 1880’s and get’s its name from the area mining claims: King, Czar, Emperor, Rex, and Sultan. This area was rich in silver and lead ores. Get into town and check out the restored Monarch Depot, the only remaining railroad structure of the Great Northern Railroad.
12
Sluice Boxes State Park Overlook – The views are full of wonder! Just off the highway, you’ll find the trailhead to hike through Sluice Boxes State Park.
13
Belt – You’ll never go hungry on this drive! We suggest the burgers at Harvest Moon Saloon or the pizza at The Diamond. There is a historic theater that has great performances through the fall and winter.
