A Night Out in Great Falls with World Ballet Company
Breathtaking. That is the first word that comes to mind when describing The World Ballet Company’s touring production of Tchaikovsky’s Swan Lake. I had the opportunity to attend their performance here in Great Falls, and when I say my eyes were misty the entire time, I am not exaggerating.
Growing up playing the violin, I was introduced to Tchaikovsky early on and fell in love with the romantic composer’s ability to drive the listener’s emotions through his music. To witness the beauty and athleticism of the World Ballet Company dancers bringing a story that has been shared for generations to life, accompanied by a live orchestra performing music I have loved since childhood, was an incredible experience
Attending a World Ballet Company performance feels like traveling to a place where time doesn’t exist. Stepping into the Mansfield Theater and seeing people of all ages and backgrounds dressed to the nines for a night out sets the stage for something special. Then, with the first sounds of the orchestra tuning and the lights dimming, any worries from the outside world seem to melt away.

Lina Sheveleva was radiant in the role of Odette/Odile. The way she made such incredible feats of strength and discipline look effortless and graceful truly took our breath away. Konstantin Geronik dazzled in the role of the Jester and had the entire audience laughing and cheering with every leap, turn, and facial expression.

Something that absolutely floored me about this experience was how the entire cast told the story of Swan Lake without a single word, yet in such a way that even my young family member, who had never seen or heard the story before, understood what was happening. She followed the characters through each scene, excited to see what might happen next. That is truly a testament to the skill and artistry of not only the dancers but the entire company, from the choreographers and musicians to the costumers and set builders.

When you have the opportunity to come to Great Falls and experience a World Ballet Company performance at the historic Mansfield Theater, I encourage you to take it. There is something about experiencing world-class performances in the elegance of a theater, where the world gets quiet for a moment, that should never be missed.
