Western Art Week

Only in March in Great Falls!

March is a big month.  Sometimes there are hints of spring in the air, but you can also still ski.  All eyes are on the basketball world both locally and nationally.  St. Patrick’s Day is in March, and this year Easter rounds out the month.  Here in Great Falls, March is a big month for us for all of those reasons and one huge other reason – Western Art Week!

For one week each year, Great Falls becomes the Western Art Capital of the World!  This renowned event got its start in 1969 and has evolved and grown over the years.  This year Western Art Week is March 13th-17th, 2024, and is comprised of 15 different shows at locations across Great Falls.  There are a handful of ticketed events, but the majority are free to attend!  Make a quick pass or linger as long as you like.  Western Art Week gives you unique access to artists to learn about their process, inspiration, and technique.  It truly is a must-do experience whether you know nothing about art or are a lifelong collector.  Think Western art is just paintings of cowboys?  Think again!  Western Art Week features interpretations of Western life in bronze, furniture, jewelry, photography, and many other mediums.  Why Great Falls and why March?  Well, famed Western artist Charlie Russell called Great Falls home and he was born on March 19th.  Western Art Week is always around his birthday and celebrates his contributions and impact on the creative world. Check out the full schedule of events for Western Art Week 2024 and listen to episode 166 of our podcast We’re No Dam Experts for a breakdown of all of the shows and what you need to know to make the most of one of Great Falls’ signature events!

Huge hardwood news!  Great Falls’ new professional basketball team will take the court for the first time! That’s right, Great Falls is now home to a pro franchise. The Great Falls Electric will compete in the Northwest Division of The Basketball League Western Conference. They start their season on the road and will have their first game against the Seattle Super Hawks on their home court on Saturday March 23rd! Check out the schedule and get your tickets now!

Speaking of basketball busyness in March, true basketball fans will love the small town camaraderie and guaranteed action of the Class C State Basketball Tournament!

Aside from Western Art Week and basketball, here are some March events you can only find in Great Falls:

Don’t forget, there’s free admission to the C.M. Russell Museum on the second Saturday of the month through April!  The History Museum is open every second Saturday of the month and admission there is always free!

One other date to note in March is Saturday March 30th.  It’s National Take a Walk in a Park Day!  We have more than 50 city parks for you to stroll, including the crown jewel Gibson Park, pictured below.
