Events You Can Only Find in Great Falls this September

September is almost here!  That means cooler temperatures, changing colors, cozy sweaters, and if you’re into it, the return of pumpkin spice everything.  It could also be really hot.  Or it could snow.  It is Montana after all.  In general though, September is a great time to visit Great Falls!  According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration the average high temperature in September in Great Falls is around 72 degrees, with an average low of around 43 degrees.  Pack your layers, like you should anytime of year, and you’ll be set.

It’s perfect weather for a scooter ride (you can find and rent a Bird scooter by downloading their app) and mural viewing.  Check out the newest downtown murals, just finished as part of the 5th Annual ArtsFest Montana event.  Great Falls now has nearly 40 murals on the walls of downtown buildings.

Here’s a look at some of those murals in the making:

September also kicks off with the end of the season triple header for the Electric City Speedway. Celebrating its 70th season, the speedway will host three nights of dirt track racing Friday, Saturday, and Sunday leading up to Labor Day.  To get you ready for racing, listen to two drivers share their knowledge (and smack talk) on episode 136 of our podcast We’re No Dam Experts.

September brings a lot of live music!  These performers are making their only Montana stop at The Newberry in Great Falls:

There’s a rare opportunity this September to cross Cochrane Dam.  Typically the dams are closed to the public, but for one day you can hike or bike from the River’s Edge Trail to Cochrane Dam and cross to the other side!

Other events that can only be found in Great Falls this September:

  • Arts, crafts, vendors, music, dance, and theatre performances await at Paris Gibson Square Museum of Art’s Arts on Fire Festival.
  • Watch people attempt to pull an airplane at the 2023 Plane Pull at Holman Aviation.

Get fresh produce, handmade items, and much more at the Great Falls Farmers’ Market on Saturdays!  The final market of the season is on September 30th near the Civic Center in Downtown Great Falls.
