Jeremiah and Katie Johnson are Montana kids, Jeremiah hails from the Flathead area and Katie grew up in Great Falls. When the two met in college, they fell in love, got married, and lived in California for a good while before moving home and buying a brewery.
Jeremiah Johnson Brewing Company (JJBC)
Jeremiah said people have been asking about his name since he was a kid, thanks to the 1972 movie ‘Jeremiah Johnson’ featuring Robert Redford as the central character – a mountain man. It is nothing for Jeremiah to introduce himself and be met with “Jeremiah Johnson, ah, just like the movie” taking it all in good stride since birth. So, buying a brewery where the signature brew was Mountain Man, an award winning scotch ale, seems almost serendipitous.
The brewery that now bears Jeremiah’s name started out as The Front Brewing Company in 2012. In 2018 Jeremiah and Katie Johnson took ownership of The Front with the goal to grow into a national brand. The ownership change resulted in a new name and identity to fulfill Jeremiah and Katie’s goal to honor their Montana heritage.
Today Jeremiah Johnson Brewing produces six beers for the retail market, each with straight forward labeling, no fancy names, just the kind of beer you can expect. All of them, that is, except that infamous Mountain Man. Mountain Man is the only beer that JJBC makes that has a logo – and it is of the mountain man himself.
JJBC brew is distributed across Montana, however, the freshest of the beer can be found only here, in Great Falls, Montana where all the production happens. JJBC gets its inspiration from the Golden Triangle agricultural region that is home to the local barley that is used in the malt, the honey, and the black beluga lentils (a special one time experience).
One Special Brew
Around Montana you will find a great rivalry among the fans of Montana State University (Bobcats) and University of Montana (Grizzlies). Jeremiah being a proud alumnus of MSU and Katie just as proud from UM. It was quite the excitement for the family, regardless of affiliation, when Jeremiah Johnson Brewing Company was awarded the opportunity to create and brew a commemorative brew to celebrate the 125th anniversary of Montana State University!
Golden Bobcat Pale Ale, as it came to be known, stays true to JJBC process featuring a host of local ingredients including filtered water from the Missouri River, Montana raised hops and malted barley and honey from Smoot Honey out of Power, Montana. Fun to note, the owners of Smoot Honey are Griz fans, and they have said they don’t mind their honey makes some of the best beer on earth (so says a HUGE Bobcat Fan)! A portion of the sales of Golden Bobcat Pale Ale is returned back to Montana State University.
To say Jeremiah is a sports fan may just be an understatement. Beyond his love of the business of making beer, Jeremiah & Katie enjoy getting out with their family to Centene Stadium to cheer on the Great Falls Voyagers – Great Falls’ own minor league baseball team. He is also a huge fan of the Seattle Seahawks, so if you get the opportunity to talk football with Jeremiah, take it. You will be glad you did.
